The Original Bucket
In 1935, a compact, rounded little building opened on Eagle Rock Blvd advertising "Giant Home Made Burgers" — the structure itself shaped like a lunch bucket. It was a blue-collar spot from the start, built for the neighborhood, not for critics.
The Julio Years
The most legendary chapter belongs to Julio Maeso, the Basque owner who ran the place from the 1960s — famous for insulting customers and cutting off a food critic's tie. Regulars reportedly included Barack Obama and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Five Years Gone
The Bucket lost its lease in 2013 and closed after 78 years on the block — a gut punch for Eagle Rock locals who'd grown up eating there. It sat quiet for five years.
Back On The Same Corner
In October 2018, The Bucket came back to the same address — same name, same corner, new energy. The menu grew to include tacos, fritas, burritos, and wings, but the mission stayed the same: great food at a fair price.
